Aims and scope

Purpose

The journal of the ISDRS is a platform for scholarly and scientific work that explores and addresses the nature and future of sustainability in a time of global crises, disruption, and change.

The journal encourages scientific conversations on creating more thriving and regenerative futures together, celebrating a diversity of voices, perspectives, disciplines, and cultures.

Vision

The ISDRS journal aims to become a prominent voice for our Society and broader sustainability community.

The journal aims to become globally recognised as a leading forum for high-impact science, policy, and practice scholarship.

Scope

The journal will:

  • Publish high-quality empirical, theoretical, practice-oriented, or artistic research that establishes new insights and knowledge, contributes to academic debates, or advances professional practice in sustainability fields.
  • Promote scholarship and practice that makes or demonstrates a contribution to knowledge or achieving transformative change.
  • Focus on original research and encourage submissions with interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary perspectives.
  • Reflect on the nature and future of sustainability and what lies beyond.

Our journal is committed to publishing research that is rigorous and free from bias. 

We accept the manuscripts in English. Abstracts, Insights, and Implications should be provided in English and up to two additional languages to increase accessibility and engagement.

  • Clinicians and healthcare professionals in hospitals and research institutions.

Open Access Policy 

Sustainability & Beyond is a Diamond open access journal. It publishes quality-checked articles under an open access-compliant licence. Authors agree to grant the publisher a non-exclusive right to publish, while retaining copyright and all other rights to their work. No publication fees are charged and all content can be accessed immediately after publication free of charge. The journal and the title rights belong to the scientific community. The community also controls the journal's financial flows and accounts, as well as all decisions regarding editorial content and workflows. It operates transparently at all levels. Sustainability & Beyond serves scientific communication and is therefore non-profit.

Copyright & Licensing

Sustainability & Beyond copyright and licensing policy is designed to promote the dissemination of knowledge and to allow authors to retain control over their work while still publishing it in the journal.

All articles in Sustainability & Beyond are published using the following licence:

CC BY: Authors retain copyright and all content can be reused unrestrictedly according to the Creative Commons Attribution License 4.0. Preprints (pre-review manuscripts), post prints (authors accepted manuscripts, AAM), and the version of record (VoR) can be deposited without restrictions. 

  • BY: credit must be given to the creator.

Sustainability & Beyond does not have an embargo period, which means that articles are available online immediately after publication.

Authors can self-archive their articles and deposit their articles in repositories, such as arXiv, PubMed Central, or institutional repositories, as long as they comply with the journal's self-archiving policy.

The self-archiving policy of Sustainability & Beyond is as follows:

  • Preprints (versions before peer review): Authors can deposit preprints at any time
  • Author Accepted Manuscripts (AAMs): Authors can deposit AAMs after acceptance
  • Author's final version / Version of Record (VoRs): Authors can deposit the final version of the article after publication in repositories of their choice (e.g. an institutional, disciplinary and general-purpose repository, etc.), as long as it is the version that was accepted for publication.
  • No embargo: There is no embargo period, which means that authors can deposit their articles in repositories immediately after publication.
  • Bibliographic information: Full bibliographic information (authors, article title, journal title, volume, issue, pages) about the original publication must be provided and links must be made to the article's DOI and the license
  • CC-BY license: Authors must ensure that the deposited article is licensed under a CC BY license, which allows others to share, use, and build upon the work as long as they give proper credit to the original authors. 

Publishing schedule and publication form

The publishing schedule of Sustainability & Beyond is designed to provide fast and efficient publication of high-quality research. Sustainability & Beyond is a continuous publication journal, which means that it does not have a traditional publishing schedule with specific issues or volumes. Instead, articles are published online as soon as they are accepted and edited.

Sustainability & Beyond does not have an embargo period, which means that articles are available online immediately after publication.

The journal is only available online. There are no printed issues. All published papers are available in PDF format.

Long term preservation

All articles and PDFs are long-term identifiable by DOIs. Sustainability & Beyond is also archived by the German National Library and PKP Preservation Network (PKP PN), including all full-text PDFs.

Publication of content does not imply endorsement from the journal or publisher, who cannot be held responsible for any errors or consequences resulting from the use of information in this series. All documents are indexed by the library or the authors themselves and can also be found via this indexing. The following subject indexing tools are used or offered as a minimum:

  • Indexing: free keywords in English
  • Classification: Dewey Decimal Classification DDC

The electronic documents are provided with individual and permanent addresses that allow direct access to the documents.

The documents are listed in suitable databases, including: the SLUB catalogue, the catalogue of the German National Library, ZDB, EZB, BASE, Crossref and Google Scholar.

The journal applies international standards, including the Open Archives Initiative (OAI) protocols, to support the structured indexing, long-term storage, dissemination, and archiving of electronic documents.

Journal Governance

The journal is led by the ISDRS Director of Publications, supported by the Executive Editorial Team, the Managing Editors and the Advisory Board. Together, these bodies are responsible for setting strategic directions and ensuring the effective implementation of the journal’s mission.

Financing

Sustainability and Beyond is financed by ISDRS (International Sustainable Development Research Society).

Author fees

Sustainability & Beyond does not charge fees from its authors.

Revenue and advertising

Sustainability & Beyond maintains full editorial independence. All editorial decisions are based solely on scholarly merit and are not influenced by commercial or financial considerations.

The journal’s operational costs are covered by institutional support from PUBLIA – SLUB Open Publishing and associated partners. Sustainability & Beyond does not currently charge publication fees and does not display commercial advertising.

If advertising or sponsorship is introduced in the future, all such content will be clearly identified and kept entirely separate from editorial material. Acceptance of advertising or sponsorship will in no way influence the editorial process, peer review, or publication decisions.

Statement on Sponsoring

Sustainability & Beyond and its website refrain from commercial advertising.

Sustainability & Beyond is a Diamond OA journal, it does not charge publication or reading fees. The costs for DOI, web hosting and plagiarism checks are covered by PUBLIA – SLUB Open Publishing (the publication service of SLUB Dresden). The work of all editors and the production team is voluntary.
